Masonic Ball Orb Necklace

by Kat
(Canada)

I have the Masonic ball orb necklace that was handed down through generations in my Family.

It opens up like a cross and has many different symbols and is quite a stunning piece.

I was once told that if a woman wore this, any Mason, whether you know them or not, could remove this from you.

Years have gone by and I talked to some Eastern Star sisters who were wearing the same kind of necklace. They enlightened me that women are now allowed to wear these necklaces.

Can you let me know what is correct here, I would be devastated if someone, especially a stranger, were to strip this Family Heirloom from me.

Regards, Kat

Hi Kat,

I have removed your live e-mail address to protect it from spambots, which are small programs that travel the web looking for e-mail addresses to send spam to.

In answer to your question, Freemasonry is a fraternal organization. While there are appendant bodies, such as the Eastern Star, Co-Masonry and also women Freemasons, regular Freemasonry began and remains as a men's fraternity.

Please do not fear that any member of the Freemason fraternity will attempt to take your Masonic ball orb necklace.

In the past, members of the fraternity felt much more stringently about a non-Mason wearing a piece of Masonic jewelry.

Freemasons are very proud of their fraternity and the wearing of a piece of Masonic jewelry by a non-Mason or a woman was considered to be masquerading as a Mason.

Times have changed quite a bit. Please enjoy your Masonic Ball Orb Necklace. If someone should attempt to steal it from you, please call the authorities, (police, sheriff, etc.) just as you would if someone should try to steal anything else that is yours. However, I doubt very much if a Freemason would attempt to take it from you.

I'm only sorry that you did not send some pictures of it for everyone to enjoy.

Thanks for asking. Hope this was helpful, Kat.

Simon

Masonic Ball Orb Necklace
by: Tricia

We also have a Masonic Ball Orb Necklace. It looks really old.

Do you know what the value of these are? It says it is 9K on the top on the ball, on the second to the last section of cross it has all kinds on initials on the back, hard to read but may be " AT 22 680/25 then it has a REG (looks like a G).

It's beautiful but looks old, were a little afraid to wear it because it looks so valuable.

Hi Tricia, I am not a jeweler, so I can not give you a jewelry appraisal. I would suggest you either take your necklace to a jeweler or look at other ones which are for sale on E-bay.

Thanks for writing!
