Can Entered Apprentices
Wear Masonic Symbols?

by Nic

Can Entered Apprentices wear Masonic symbols and jewelry, like watches and pins?

The symbols most often displayed on Masonic jewelry (watches, pins, cuff links, etc.) is the square and compasses of a Master Mason.

If you are in doubt of the propriety of such within your jurisdiction, you should ask your DDGM (District Deputy Grand Master) or DDGL (District Deputy Grand Lecturer).

Thanks for writing.

EA and Fellowcraft rings
by: Anonymous

This is because these are short periods of learning. As MM (Master Masons), we should keep our EAs and Fellowcraftmen away from Masonic regalia... Being a mason is not about showing off our jewelry...

If you feel you want some fellow brethren to recognize you as a mason and are not yet a Master Mason, you could consider wearing a forget me not pin.

Simon's Reply:

You made a good point about wearing a forget-me-not pin, as long as the wearer understands its meaning. Otherwise, there wouldn't really be a point to wearing it.

I also wanted to add that the time spent between receiving all 3 degrees is not very long in the United States, however, in many other countries, it takes a much longer time...several years, in fact.

I think that members who purchase EA and Fellowcraft rings may enjoy those rings for a very short period of time, (in the U.S.), but once they become a Master Mason and purchase their Master Mason ring, they will never again wear either of the other 2 rings.

This makes purchasing EA and Fellowcraft rings not only against tradition, but, since a member will want a Master Mason ring, they could save their money and purchase a much nicer MM ring for themselves, which they will be able to enjoy for many years to come.

I made a mistake as an EA, hope I can prevent you from doing the same
by: Adam

My time as an EA coincided with our state's Grand Lodge meeting, a time when there is a LOT of Masonic jewelry for sale.

I purchased a Master Mason ring (not realizing it to be such), and was proudly wearing it for a few weeks, thinking only that it displayed my choosing to be a Mason.

A brother very politely set me straight in that, since I had not yet earned the position of Master, it was inappropriate for me to be wearing this ring at that time.

I've never seen any EA rings or jewelry (and only a few Fellowcrafts), because both of these are periods of learning and transition, not the final goal.

Consider the position of Master as something to strive for, through your work as an EA and Fellowcraft.
